On August 1 local time, United Nations
Secretary General Guterres told reporters that the grain ship leaving Odessa
port in Ukraine earlier that day brought hope for stabilizing the global food
situation.
Guterres said that after the grain ship
arrived at the checkpoint in Turkey on August 2, it would transport corn to
Tripoli, Lebanon. Guterres said, "this ship carries two items in short
supply: corn and hope."
He said that this is the first concrete
achievement of the "Black Sea Grain initiative", and the United
Nations, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine have all made unremitting efforts to
achieve this milestone.
Guterres also said that the world food
program was planning to hire a ship to purchase and transport about 30000 tons
of wheat from Ukraine, and the WFP would release relevant details in the next
few days.
Finally, Guterres once again called on all
parties to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to take this opportunity, in
accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law, to end
the conflict as soon as possible for the sake of Russia and Ukraine and the
world.
