As one of the three staple food grains, wheat import has increased
sharply recently. According to customs statistics, after the
year-on-year 270% increase in October, China’s wheat import again had a
huge increase-721.1% on a year-on-year basis in November, with the
import volume 968,064 tons. However, the total import volume since the
year beginning till now is 5,118,062 tons, with a year-on-year increase
of 38.96%.
State Grain and Oil Info Center recently raised its predicted wheat
import volume of 2013-2014 from previous 7.5 million tons to 8 million
tons, which is also the highest level since 1995. While in this August,
the Info Center had predicted China’s wheat import would reach 6.5
million tons, hitting a new high in recent nine years.
“Don't make such a big deal out of it. Imported wheat has lower prices
and good quality; it’s more profitable in the market,” a manager from a
grain and oil trading company is quite indifferent to recent sharp
increase of wheat import.
